Asian stock markets displayed varied performances on Monday amid geopolitical developments affecting energy markets. Brent crude oil prices remained steady above $104 per barrel following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a plan to purchase Russian diesel, a move that has sparked significant debate. The proposal, aimed at easing fuel prices, has been criticized by U.S. lawmakers who are concerned about bolstering Russia’s energy revenues during its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

In Asian trading, South Korea’s Kospi index saw a decline of 3.7% to settle at 6,384.24, while the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong rose by 0.3% to 24,271.20. Meanwhile, the Shanghai Composite Index experienced a slight dip of 0.4% to 3,797.24, and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 increased by 0.8% to reach 8,783.20. Trump stated that the agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin would start with more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel, with further shipments planned in the coming months. Despite these assurances, concerns remain high as the deal may undermine efforts to limit Russia’s energy funding. A bipartisan group of U.S. senators has urged the administration to reconsider the decision, highlighting the potential implications for the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Additionally, Trump mentioned an energy ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, though details were scarce, and reports of continued attacks on energy infrastructure have cast doubt on its effectiveness.

On the commodities front, Brent crude edged up 0.1% to $104.76 per barrel, while U.S. benchmark crude fell 0.4% to $91.50. The oil market continues to fluctuate amid the conflict with Iran and broader disruptions to energy supplies.
