Nvidia has teamed up with Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries to advance the shipbuilding industry with the development of AI-enhanced robots. This collaboration is set to introduce automation and state-of-the-art digital solutions in shipyards, aiming to revolutionize traditional methods.

The innovative robots are being engineered to handle tasks such as welding, painting, inspection, and material management. This effort is part of a broader vision to create a next-generation digital shipyard that integrates physical AI with digital twin technology. A key objective of this initiative is to tackle Japan’s increasing labor shortages, a challenge aggravated by an aging workforce and a dwindling pool of skilled labor, while simultaneously boosting efficiency in ship production and promoting the development of low- and zero-emission vessels.

In addition to the partnership announcement, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang, during his Tokyo visit, highlighted the pivotal role Sega played in Nvidia’s early days. He acknowledged Sega’s investment of $5 million in the 1990s, which he credited with providing critical support that helped Nvidia navigate its formative years.
