Japanese semiconductor-related companies are making significant inroads into India’s burgeoning semiconductor industry as the nation strives to establish a comprehensive domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem. This expansion is underscored by the participation of over 30 Japanese firms at the Semicon India 2026 event in New Delhi, where discussions focused on investment opportunities, technology partnerships, supply chains, and research and development.

India’s ambition to become a global semiconductor hub encompasses a wide range of activities, including chip materials, design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing. The Indian government is actively promoting the development of domestic semiconductor capabilities and enhancing the skills of its workforce to support this vision.

Already, several Japanese companies are forming partnerships with Indian counterparts. Fujifilm is collaborating with Tata Electronics on advanced semiconductor materials, and Sumitomo Chemical is exploring cooperation on semiconductor material supply chains. Additionally, Enomoto is expected to provide production technology support to Indian partners.

In a bid to further boost India’s semiconductor capabilities, Tokyo Electron plans to establish a training center in Gujarat by 2027. This facility aims to cultivate engineers with expertise in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, addressing a critical gap in the country’s talent pool.

Despite India’s abundance of engineering talent, the country still faces a shortage of workers with specialized skills in the semiconductor sector. The involvement of Japanese companies is anticipated to facilitate technology transfer, bolster workforce development, and strengthen India’s semiconductor supply chain, thereby enhancing the country’s position in the global semiconductor industry.
