In a significant move citing national security concerns, the United States has introduced tariffs as high as 100% on certain drone imports and their components. The decision is part of an effort to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly those dominated by China. The tariffs primarily target larger unmanned aircraft systems weighing over 25 kilograms and those with capabilities linked to national security, such as thermal imaging and docking stations. While these products will incur a 100% tariff, smaller drones will face a 25% levy.
In addition to China, the new tariffs will also impact products from several other major trading partners. Imports of drones and components originating from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be subjected to a 15% tariff. Meanwhile, drone-related imports from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff, provided the technology originates from these countries or within the United States. These measures are set to commence on September 3.
The White House has stated that these tariffs are designed to bolster the U.S. defense and industrial sectors, encouraging domestic drone manufacturing which in turn is expected to generate jobs for American workers. The overarching goal is to minimize the U.S.’s dependence on foreign suppliers in the drone market. The global drone industry is currently dominated by China, with Shenzhen-based DJI holding a substantial share of the U.S. commercial drone market. DJI has previously been subject to U.S. restrictions due to national security concerns.
U.S. authorities have raised alarms over the potential risks posed by foreign-manufactured drones, including concerns over surveillance, the collection of sensitive data, and the threat of potential attacks. In response to these risks, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission has previously advocated for increased domestic production of drones. This tariff introduction is part of broader trade and technological tensions between the United States and China, with the latter imposing its own restrictions on drone exports to the U.S. and taking action against several American firms.
