Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Takaichi underscored Japan’s dedication to maintaining a free and open international order grounded in international law, a stance Japan has held since the aftermath of World War II.
As the prime minister addressed the assembly for the first time since assuming office, she highlighted the end of the stable international environment that had persisted since the Cold War. Stressing the continued importance of the United Nations in maintaining global peace and stability, Takaichi called for substantial reforms within the UN and its Security Council. She emphasized the need for these entities to better reflect the diversity of the international community in their membership.
Amidst these discussions, Takaichi chose not to comment directly on recent U.S. sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane, a Japanese national. Instead, she reiterated Japan’s long-standing support for international judicial institutions, including the ICC, reinforcing her country’s position on the global stage.
The prime minister also turned her attention to pressing international conflicts, condemning Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. She described unilateral attempts to alter the status quo by force as unacceptable and called for enhanced international efforts to curb North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. Takaichi reaffirmed Japan’s readiness to engage in dialogue to address the long-standing issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.
On the economic front, Takaichi addressed energy security concerns, noting Japan’s commitment to collaborating with Gulf countries to bolster resilience and ensure stable energy supplies amid current disruptions in major trade routes. She called for increased international cooperation on critical resources and advancements in artificial intelligence, signaling Japan’s proactive role in addressing global economic and technological challenges.
