Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale met for the first time in Tokyo, underscoring efforts to enhance relations between the two nations. This meeting highlights Japan’s intention to build stronger ties with the Solomon Islands, especially after changes in the Pacific nation’s diplomatic landscape. The leaders discussed expanding development cooperation, with Japan offering 3 billion yen (around $18.3 million) in yen loans, and agreed to facilitate increased people-to-people interactions.
Takaichi emphasized Japan’s commitment to fostering a “strong and prosperous cooperative relationship” with the Solomon Islands, grounded in mutual values such as freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Prime Minister Wale expressed appreciation for Japan’s support, recognizing the importance of assistance in addressing the economic and developmental challenges that Pacific island nations often face.
The dialogue occurs in the backdrop of a significant diplomatic shift in the Solomon Islands in recent years. The country redirected its diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China in 2019 and subsequently signed a security agreement with Beijing in 2022. This agreement permits Chinese naval access to its ports and allows Chinese security personnel to operate within the country, a move that has stirred concerns among regional allies regarding China’s increasing influence in the Pacific.
Since assuming office in May 2026, Prime Minister Wale has signaled a potential change in the Solomon Islands’ foreign policy trajectory. He has committed to reassessing the security pact with China and has been vocal about his disapproval of China’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific. His administration has also prioritized strengthening relationships with traditional allies by visiting countries like Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan.
For Japan, fostering ties with the Solomon Islands aligns with its broader strategic objective of advancing a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, which aims to bolster regional stability and cooperation. In a gesture of goodwill, Takaichi gifted Wale a football from the Nara Prefectural Football Association, symbolizing the deep-rooted popularity of the sport in the Solomon Islands and reflecting her personal connection to Nara Prefecture.
