Vietnam and Japan have pledged to enhance their defence collaboration in various strategic domains, including military training, cybersecurity, the development of the defence industry, United Nations peacekeeping efforts, and initiatives aimed at post-war recovery. This commitment was solidified in a meeting held in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang and General Uchikura Hiroaki, the Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces.
During their discussions, the two generals explored ways to bolster bilateral defence relations and improve the execution of existing cooperation agreements. General Giang underscored Vietnam’s dedication to advancing consultation and dialogue frameworks, increasing cooperation among military divisions, and fostering partnerships in defence technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. He pointed out that the defence relationship is a crucial aspect of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Japan.
General Giang also acknowledged Japan’s contributions in areas such as personnel training, the development of the defence industry, technology transfer, and post-war recovery projects. He advocated for more scholarship and training opportunities for Vietnamese military personnel, especially in science, engineering, and technology sectors.
Japan is recognized as one of Vietnam’s principal economic and strategic allies, with robust cooperation in trade, investment, development aid, and labour exchanges. The scope of defence cooperation has notably expanded, facilitated by regular policy dialogues and military consultations between the two nations.
General Uchikura reiterated Japan’s commitment to reinforcing defence ties with Vietnam and endorsed the expansion of cooperation in high-level exchanges, military education, cybersecurity, and healthcare services within the armed forces. Both countries agreed to maintain close cooperation to further build mutual trust, support regional stability, and promote long-term strategic collaboration.
